In it he proposes that the response to the film has been so positive because people today are especially receptive to the authentic witness of life. The life of the monastic community of Tibhirine was a life of “dialogue” with their Muslim neighbors. The powerful witness of an authentic “dialogical” life is the message the producer wished to convey. This same message had already been emphasized—prophetically—by Pope Paul VI in his exhortation Evangelii Nuntiandi and was specifically related to this film by Cardinal Timothy Dolan. Dom Armand Veilleux OCSO, now Abbot of Scourmont in Belgium, was assistant to the Abbot General of the Trappists when the monks of Tibhirine were abducted and executed.
