Plenary Session of the
Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue

A plenary session of the newly-named Dicastery (formerly Pontifical Council) for Interreligious Dialogue was convened in Rome June 6-8, 2022, on the theme “Interreligious Dialogue and Conviviality.” Members and consultors of the Dicastery addressed the theme through papers reporting on interreligious dialogue in different geographical areas. Ample time was devoted to reflection and exchange among the participants to explore how the Christian community can promote conviviality and fraternity among members of different religious traditions so that they may contribute to the good of all humanity.

On June 6, the Monday after Pentecost, participants in the plenary session were received in audience by His Holiness Pope Francis. In his address, he noted that it was on the feast of Pentecost in 1964 that Pope Saint Paul VI announced the birth of the “Secretariat for non-Christians.” The Second Vatican Council was still in session, but Nostra aetate, the council's Declaration on the Relation of the Church to Non-Christian Religions, had not yet been promulgated, nor had the Encyclical Ecclesiam suam, considered the magna charta of dialogue in its various forms, yet been issued.

“How far the Spirit has brought us in these sixty years!” Pope Francis exclaimed.

At the conclusion of the plenary session, William Skudlarek, OSB, Secretary General of DIM•MID, addressed the assembly briefly on “Conviviality in Monastic Interreligious Dialogue,” doing so by means of a pre-recorded video.

The proceedings of the General Assembly will be published in a future issue of Pro Dialogo.
